(1) Design Motivation — "Why did we design this?"
The Cascade says that "the last rule wins." But what if you have a rule at the top of your file that says "Make the button with ID #submit-btn red", and a rule at the bottom that says "Make all <button> tags blue"?
We intuitively want the specific #submit-btn rule to win, even if it comes first, because it is far more precise.
The W3C created Specificity as a mathematical point system. Before checking the source order, the browser calculates the Specificity score of each conflicting selector. The selector with the highest score always wins, regardless of where it appears in the file. Source order is only used as a tie-breaker if the scores are identical.

Imagine a poker game where cards have different point values.
- An Element Selector (
p) is a low card (worth 1 point). - A Class Selector (

Mistake 1: Using the !important flag as a crutch
The mistake: When a developer can't figure out why their CSS rule isn't applying (usually because another rule has higher specificity), they add !important to force it to win (e.g., color: red !important;).
Why it's wrong: The !important flag is the nuclear option. It gives the rule a score of 10,000, instantly obliterating the entire Cascade and Specificity system. If you start using it, you will eventually have to use it everywhere just to override your other !important tags. This creates an unmaintainable nightmare. Senior developers rarely, if ever, use !important. Instead, they take the time to understand and calculate the specificty of their selectors.

Why it's wrong: A single ID selector (Specificity 1-0-0) will ALWAYS outweigh any number of combined class selectors (0-5-0). Refactor to avoid ID selectors for styling.
