By default, the browser handles all layout automatically. If you put three <div>s in a row, they stack perfectly on top of each other. This is called the "Normal Document Flow." However, sometimes you want to nudge an element slightly off-center (e.g., move an icon 5 pixels to the right) without ruining the layout of the rest of the page. The W3C created the position property to give developers manual control over an element's exact location on the screen.

  1. position: static; (The Default)

    • Behavior: This is the default state of every HTML element. The element sits exactly where the browser's normal flow puts it.
    • The Catch: Elements that are static completely ignore the top, bottom, left, right, and z-index properties!

Mistake 1: Trying to move a static element

The mistake: Writing top: 20px; on an element, refreshing the page, and screaming because the element didn't move.

Why it's wrong: You forgot to unlock the positioning tools! By default, all elements are position: static;, and static elements completely ignore top/bottom/left/right. You must explicitly declare position: relative; first.

Mistake 2: Confusing margin with relative positioning

The mistake: Using position: relative; top: 20px; instead of margin-top: 20px; to create space between paragraphs.
