(1) Design Motivation — "Why did we design this?"

Imagine you have a fixed 200px sidebar, and you want a main content area to take up all the remaining space on the screen. You can't say width: 100%, because that doesn't account for the 200px sidebar (it will overflow). You can't use pixels, because you don't know how big the user's screen is. Before Flexbox and Grid, this was an impossible nightmare. The W3C created calc() to let the browser do dynamic math on the fly. You can literally tell the browser: "Make this element 100% wide, minus 200px."

Imagine having a 100budget(100100 budget (`100%`) for a party. You know the cake costs exactly 20 (20px), but you don't know exactly how many dollars 100% represents until payday. calc(100% - $20) lets you set aside the cake money and safely spend the rest on balloons, regardless of what the final paycheck is.

Mixing vh and px

A classic use case: You want a hero section to take up the full height of the screen (100vh), but you have a fixed 60px navigation bar at the top. If you use 100vh, the hero section will push 60px off the bottom of the screen.

4. Common Mistakes & Pitfalls

Mistake 1: Forgetting the spaces around operators

The mistake: Writing width: calc(100%-50px); (no spaces around the minus sign).

Why it's wrong: This will completely break the CSS rule, and the element will disappear or default to 0! Why? Because CSS allows negative numbers (like margin: -50px;). If you write 100%-50px without spaces, the browser parser thinks you are writing a weird string that includes a negative 50px, not a math equation. Golden Rule: You MUST put a space on both sides of the + and - operators in calc().


Mistake 2: Omitting Mandatory Spaces Around + and - Operators inside calc()

The mistake: Writing width: calc(100%-40px); or width: calc(100%+20px);.

Why it's wrong: CSS specifications require spaces around + and - operators inside calc()! Omitting spaces causes calc(100%-40px) to be parsed as a invalid negative percentage token 100%-40px.

Incorrect:

width: calc(100%-40px); /* ❌ Syntax error! Missing spaces around minus operator! */

Fix:

width: calc(100% - 40px); /* Mandatory spaces around + and - */

Mistake 3: Attempting to Multiply Two Length Units Together inside calc() (calc(10px * 20px))

Why it's wrong: In calc(), multiplication (*) requires AT LEAST ONE argument to be a unitless number (e.g. calc(10px * 2)). Multiplying length by length is invalid syntax.
