(1) Design Motivation — "Why did we design this?"

Percentages make layouts fluid. If you style a central column with width: 90%;, it resizes smoothly when you shrink the window.

But percentages can create problems on extreme screen sizes:

  • Desktop Stretch: On a massive 2560px desktop monitor, a 90% wide paragraph stretches to 2300px. A single sentence stretches across the entire screen, making it extremely tiring for the human eye to track.
  • Mobile Height Collapse: If you lock a card height to 200px to make a grid look neat, and then open the site on mobile, the text columns shrink horizontally, forcing words to wrap. The wrapped text quickly exceeds 200px and spills out of the bottom of the card, overlapping sibling items.

To solve these issues, the W3C created boundary sizing properties: max-width and min-height.


(2) Preventing Desktop Stretch: max-width

max-width sets an upper boundary limit:

Mistake 1: Setting a fixed height instead of min-height for content boxes

The mistake: Styling a card containing user-generated comments or dynamic content with height: 250px:
