(1) Design Motivation — "Why did we design this?"

In the early days of mobile web design, developers used a "Desktop-First" workflow. They wrote all the complex CSS for a desktop site first, and then added @media (max-width: 768px) queries to strip away sidebars, float columns, absolute positions, and large images to squeeze the site onto a phone screen.

This created massive problems:

  • Messy CSS Code: You had to write a desktop rule, then write a mobile rule to explicitly undo or turn off the desktop rule (e.g. float: none; position: static; width: auto;).
  • Poor Performance: Mobile phones (which typically have slower processors and weaker cellular connections than desktop computers) had to download, parse, and evaluate a massive mountain of complex layout rules, only to immediately undo them.

To fix this, the community adopted Mobile-First Design (Progressive Enhancement).

You write simple, single-column styles by default.

Then, you progressively add complexity (like multi-column Grid columns or absolute positioning offsets) using min-width media queries only when the viewport has enough room to display them.

  • Graceful Degradation (Desktop-First): Start with the complex version, and try to make it work on simpler devices by stripping features. (Uses max-width rules).
  • Progressive Enhancement (Mobile-First): Start with the simplest, most accessible version, and add columns, menus, and layouts as screen size increases. (Uses min-width rules).

4. Common Mistakes & Pitfalls

Mistake 1: Mixing min-width and max-width indiscriminately

The mistake: Writing a stylesheet that alternates between min-width and max-width queries to handle different page elements:
