(1) Design Motivation — "Why did we design this?"
If you place two <p> paragraphs next to each other, you don't want the text to be completely squished together. You need a way to create breathing room between elements.
The W3C created the margin property. It represents completely invisible, transparent space that exists outside the border of your element. Its sole purpose is to push neighboring elements away. Because it is completely transparent, the background-color of your element will not stretch into the margin.

Imagine two houses built on a street.

Mistake 1: Margin Collapse (The notorious CSS gotcha)
The mistake: Assuming that if Element A has a margin-bottom: 20px, and Element B right below it has a margin-top: 30px, the total space between them will be 50px.
Why it's wrong: In standard CSS block layouts, vertical margins collapse into each other. The browser doesn't add them together (20 + 30 = 50). Instead, it looks at both margins, takes the largest one (30px), and uses only that. The smaller margin is completely absorbed. This confuses almost every beginner. Note: This only happens to top/bottom margins, never left/right.
