(1) Design Motivation — "Why did we design this?"
If you create a button and add text inside it, by default, the text will touch the exact edges of the button's background and border. It looks cramped and ugly.
The W3C created the padding property to give content "breathing room" inside its container. Because padding exists inside the border, it is physically part of the element itself. Therefore, the element's background-color or background-image will completely fill the padding area.

Imagine a picture frame. The Content is the photograph itself. The Border is the wooden frame around the outside. The Padding is the white cardboard matting that sits between the photograph and the wooden frame. It makes the picture look professional by giving it inner breathing room.

4. Common Mistakes & Pitfalls
Mistake 1: Thinking padding doesn't affect the element's total size
The mistake: Setting an element to width: 200px; and adding padding: 20px;, and assuming the element will still be 200px wide on the screen.
Why it's wrong: Under the default CSS math rules, width only applies to the Content area. Padding is added on top of the width!
So, 200px (Content) + 20px (Left Padding) + 20px (Right Padding) = 240px Total Width.
This math drives developers insane because it constantly breaks layouts. This is why modern developers use box-sizing: border-box to force the browser to include padding in the width calculation!
Mistake 2: Attempting to Use Negative Values for padding (padding: -10px)
The mistake: Writing padding: -10px; trying to pull content inward.
Why it's wrong: CSS specifications strictly forbid negative values for padding! Negative padding values are invalid and ignored by browsers. Use negative margin.

Mistake 3: Applying Vertical Padding (padding-top/padding-bottom) to Inline Elements
